Biography of Steve Chen

Steve Chen is an American-Taiwanese businessman and developer. He is best known as one of the co-founders of the popular video-sharing platform, YouTube.

Early Life and Education

Steve Chen was born on August 18, 1978, in Taipei, Taiwan. When he was 15 years old, his family relocated to the United States. Despite struggling with English, Chen managed to complete high school in America and passed exams to enter university. After attending several schools, he eventually earned a degree from a specialized math school in Illinois and went on to study at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in computer science in 2002.

Career

After college, Steve Chen secured a position at PayPal, where he met Chad Hurley and Jawed Karim, his future business partners. The trio became friends and discovered shared interests, but it took a couple of years before they started working together. Before starting YouTube, Chen briefly worked at Facebook but left the company to pursue his own project.

In 2005, Chen, along with Hurley and Karim, launched the beta version of YouTube. Chen played a crucial role as the chief engineer of the project, creating the algorithm and fixing early issues. The platform quickly gained attention from users and attracted interest from large companies. Within a year, Google announced its intention to acquire YouTube for $1.65 billion, making it one of the most successful and valuable websites at that time.

Under Google's ownership, YouTube underwent some modifications, but its interface and core functionality remained largely unchanged. In 2006, Steve Chen was included in the "The 50 people who matter now" list. After the sale, he invested his profits in Google stocks, which generated $326 million in profits for him within a year.

After some time out of the spotlight, Chen and his partners founded AVOS Systems in 2011. The project was later acquired by Delicious. In 2012, Chen became the founder of MixBit, a video-sharing service. Currently, he is focused on developing and growing the platform, searching for a wider audience.
