Mandela family feud over Zenani's death

This follows Mankazana's son's involvement in the car crash last month that claimed the life of Madiba's great-granddaughter, who was also called Zenani.

Mankazana is the father of Sizwe, who was driving the car which crashed in the early hours of June 11 killing 13-year-old Zenani.

The teenager is the daughter of Zoleka Seakamela, whose mother is Zindzi Mandela, Madiba's other daughter by his marriage to Winnie Madikizela-Mandela.

The youngster was named after Zindzi's older sister, Zenani.

Apparently Zindzi is so angry that she has barred Mankazana, a regular visitor since his relationship with Zenani, and his son from the family home.

The Sunday Times has been told that father and son had been ordered off three weeks ago and told to stay away until Sizwe's case on charges of culpable homicide and drunk driving is finalised.

Mankazana has interests in mining and is also a director of cellphone company Cell C.

The young Zenani, who was buried two weeks ago, died on her way home from the 2010 World Cup Kick-Off Concert at Orlando Stadium in Soweto. She had turned 13 two days earlier.

Zindzi is apparently angry that Mankazana paid Sizwe's bail without discussing it with the Mandela family. A close friend said Zindzi had wanted to know what happened that night and how her granddaughter died first.

The friend said Zindzi was upset because although the Mankazanas were very close to her family, when the tragedy happened they thought only of saving their son from facing the consequences of his actions.

On June 19, the two Mandela sisters were at their mother Winnie Madikizela-Mandela's home in Orlando West (Soweto) when Mankazana was asked to leave.

A relative of the Mandelas, who was also at the house, said Zindzi told her mother that she would leave the house if he did not.

Zindzi told her friends that she needed time to mourn Zenani's death, and did not want to see Mankazana or his son around her mother's home.

A relative close to the Mandelas said: "Sizwe and his father are banned until the case is closed in court. We don't want to see them anywhere near our family. Zwelakhe bailing his son out without consulting the family was wrong.

"We are not a family anymore. He can continue dating Zenani (but) out of our sight."

Mankazana refused to talk to the Sunday Times. "I don't want to speak to you about the matter," he said. "No comment, thank you."

Zenani was previously married to Prince Cedza Dlamini of Swaziland, but the couple are now divorced.

Coincidentally, Sizwe is a friend of Nhlahla Masinga, who was driving the car in which musician Lebo Mathosa was killed in an accident in 2006. Masinga was 20 years old at the time.

Police spokesman Brigadier Govindsamy Mariemuthoo this week said Sizwe's case had been struck from the roll to allow police to investigate the matter further.

"He is facing a culpable homicide and drunk driving case. We are busy investigating the matter and he is expected back in court on July 26," Mariemuthoo said.

He could not confirm whether Sizwe has a driver's licence.

Sizwe had been studying in the US for the past few years and returned to South Africa in December last year.
